Interview with Gifford Medical Center

By: Shawn Mcgowan

By Shawn McGowan,

Celebrating 10 years of connecting Vermont job seekers and employers, recently selected our third quarter winners, who each selected a nonprofit to receive a $500 donation, in their name, from One of the Live Work Give contest winners was Janice Davis, who chose Gifford Medical Center Senior Living Community. I recently caught up with Gifford Medical's Director of Development & Public Relations, Ashley Lincoln, to learn more about this award-winning community hospital that is dedicated to providing high-quality, accessible healthcare to central Vermont.

What is Gifford Medical Center's mission, specifically in regards to senior care?

Ashley Lincoln, Gifford Medical Center: Gifford has been committed to meeting the White River Valley and Central Vermont region's healthcare needs for more than a century. That tireless commitment to the highest quality, most accessible care for all continues today, and into the future. As a community hospital, Gifford's mission is to improve the health of the people we serve by providing and assuring access to affordable and high-quality healthcare, and by promoting the health and well-being of everyone in our service area.

Can you tell us about what Hillside Senior Living Center will offer to community seniors?

AL: This facility would add 40 units of independent living and a 20-bed assisted living facility, sharing staff and services with the nursing home, and catering to the needs of medically complex patients. All patients and residents would share the convenience of a single campus layout, replete with walkable paths connected to the adjacent town center. This is designed to intermingle residents from the Gifford senior living community with the greater Randolph Center community.

Was the need for a new facility simply to accommodate a growing senior population or does it address other needs not currently available?

AL: This project was formalized in 2007 in response to a demonstrated community need. Gifford is committing resources toward the growing demand for senior care options. Gifford provides a high quality continuum of healthcare from birth to end of life. The Senior Living Community will add a new 30-bed nursing home with independent living and assisted living units, as well as industry standard private patient rooms, creating a senior living community that will be cherished for decades.

What are some key successes Gifford Medical Center has achieved recently?

AL: The Menig Extended Care Facility has received numerous awards for its quality of care and resident satisfaction. Menig was recognized in 2013 Best Nursing Homes with the maximum five-star rating. Menig was also honored in 2011 and 2012 to be named among the top 39 nursing homes in the nation. In addition, for several years Menig received the following national awards: The State Quality Award and Gold Star Employer.

Tell us about one of the senior programs that Gifford is proud to offer.

AL: Gifford provides the only nursing home facility in Orange County. We offer an Adult Day Care program that provides seniors and disabled adults with day care services, helping them remain in their homes longer and providing needed respite to home caregivers. The program is individually structured for each participant and offers music, arts and crafts, discussion groups, exercise and spiritual care, while taking care of each person's medical, physical and social needs.

How important is it for seniors to have access to care in their immediate community?

AL: Vermont has the second oldest populations in the nation. Our seniors are the fabric of our community. They are the ones who have built the businesses, served in public roles and provided the foundation for the next generation. It is sad when our grandparents, neighbors and friends have to leave their homes to find more appropriate housing. Gifford is working to provide an option that keeps them in their community, receiving services from the people they trust and enjoying their golden years with their friends.

How can others help make this exciting new project a reality?

AL: This campaign is Gifford's largest in recent memory and our greatest opportunity to make a substantial difference in our community. Janice's gift will truly make a difference for generations of Vermonters, including those benefiting directly from the care and housing we will provide, as well as those younger generations who will be able to visit their loved one without driving great distances (often in difficult weather and over difficult terrain). Donor support and generous investments like these are necessary to bring this project to completion.
